Reflexive Radio

Coming next week, a radio show about radio! Aspects of, musings about and analyzing of the tradition of sound. We'll hear pieces about the first sounds of radio, the phenomena of knowing only voices and a few others that I'll have to just save until broadcast. We'll also have a special guest with me, on to talk about one of radio's old-time uses. Stay tuned....

Silver Screens

This past Tuesday, we played a variety of pieces along the theme of movies! Film, if you will.
Along with interesting segments of technical secrets of the art, we heard stories of those experiencing film from the audience perpective and a participatory perspective, whether that be opening midnight movie showings to cult-film fanatics or recreating your favorite childhood movie over the course of seven years. Like usual, most of the pieces played can also be heard again at prx.org.

Health and Life

Our next show will be a look into the topic of physical challenges in health and will provide a personal, self-narrative look into many people's lives who are affected by physical disabilities, degenerative conditions and other health challenges that most people in the world are affected by at one point or another. Please be aware that in no way am I considering myself a medical expert or experienced in dealing with serious health conditions in any way, and I play these pieces simply so that their storytellers have another audience and voices can be heard.

I want to thank a fellow former-UCSC student, Helen, for allowing me to play her own personal piece documenting her mother's experience with breast cancer; it takes a strong person to put such a sensitive and intimate story out for others to hear.

Working World

This Tuesday, we'll hear about Working Jobs.

As a tribute to my new life starting in the "real world" of adults, working, bills and full responsibility that comes after graduating, I'm going to play a variety of documentaries looking into the variety of work, jobs and careers and what it means to do what you do. Pieces will feature mascots, aerobic instructors, recent college grads, avalanche forecasters and more. We'll also feature an piece made by Ira Glass, early on in his own career, on his way to become a radio legend.
