Bicycles & the End of Summer

For our last week of the Summer Program, I bring you a show about bicycles. Or cycling. Or whatever you might call it, besides wonderful. Now, I'm no "roadie" or bike expert but I am quite fascinated by the bicycle culture and community that surrounds this lifestyle's key ingredient. Bicycling and cycling provide a lot of dialogue and audible material for a large number of audio documentaries. I'm pleased to bring you just a sampling of what's out there.

Apart from it being a bicycle episode, this will also be Hear Me Out's last episode for now. I'm going to be taking a hiatus from the show in order to work on my own pending audio projects as well as prepare more shows for future quarters' programs. I've appreciated your listenership more than you know; I hope this summer's show hs been as memorable experience for you as it has been for me. I encourage you to keep checking back with this blog as I'll be posting my current audio documentaries and upcoming projects, as well as news about the return of Hear Me Out in 2008. And, as always, I would love to hear from you and share ideas. Email me at hearmeoutkzsc@gmail.com, yes? Thanks for listening. --- Sara-in-the-Studio

Vietnam, Other Views

In researching audio documentaries that I'd like to play, I noticed many, many pieces of all varieties on Vietnam, the Vietnam War and mostly, the after effects.
While I can't play all of them or even most of them, I'll be bringing you a few. One of the pieces features a look into the life of Kate Webb, a pioneer war correspondent and journalist (pictured here, photo not by me...of course. thanks, Google!). Others look at how music saved, tape recorders were company, property was stolen and respect never given.

Reflexive Radio

Coming next week, a radio show about radio! Aspects of, musings about and analyzing of the tradition of sound. We'll hear pieces about the first sounds of radio, the phenomena of knowing only voices and a few others that I'll have to just save until broadcast. We'll also have a special guest with me, on to talk about one of radio's old-time uses. Stay tuned....

Silver Screens

This past Tuesday, we played a variety of pieces along the theme of movies! Film, if you will.
Along with interesting segments of technical secrets of the art, we heard stories of those experiencing film from the audience perpective and a participatory perspective, whether that be opening midnight movie showings to cult-film fanatics or recreating your favorite childhood movie over the course of seven years. Like usual, most of the pieces played can also be heard again at prx.org.

Health and Life

Our next show will be a look into the topic of physical challenges in health and will provide a personal, self-narrative look into many people's lives who are affected by physical disabilities, degenerative conditions and other health challenges that most people in the world are affected by at one point or another. Please be aware that in no way am I considering myself a medical expert or experienced in dealing with serious health conditions in any way, and I play these pieces simply so that their storytellers have another audience and voices can be heard.

I want to thank a fellow former-UCSC student, Helen, for allowing me to play her own personal piece documenting her mother's experience with breast cancer; it takes a strong person to put such a sensitive and intimate story out for others to hear.

Working World

This Tuesday, we'll hear about Working Jobs.

As a tribute to my new life starting in the "real world" of adults, working, bills and full responsibility that comes after graduating, I'm going to play a variety of documentaries looking into the variety of work, jobs and careers and what it means to do what you do. Pieces will feature mascots, aerobic instructors, recent college grads, avalanche forecasters and more. We'll also feature an piece made by Ira Glass, early on in his own career, on his way to become a radio legend.

Immigration

This Tuesday, 'Hear Me Out' will discuss---through its audio documentaries---issues around immigration, specifically Latino immigration in the United States. This episode will also feature a variety of pieces from a project by university students at Duke University, courtesy of the Center for Documentary Studies and Student Action With Farmworkers in Durham, North Carolina.
These pieces are part of a beginning stage of a larger multi-media documentary project called Nuestros Historias, Nuestros Suenos; Our Stories, Our Dreams; a 2-year long project to document the experiences of Latino immigrants and residents in the North Carolina school system. Look for more on the project at the Center for Documentary Studies' website.

We'll hear first person accounts of immigration, migration, naturalization and the experience getting outside one's own personal expectations.

Tune in at 7pm this Tuesday. I hope you'll be learning to listen and listening to learn.

Live: Jarrod Sport

Last night, we were honored to have Jarrod Sport on the show to talk about his piece, Bayview: Urban Renewal or Utter Removal?, and his work in audio. Jarrod is a student at UCSC and an audio producer, now working part time at KQED in San Francisco. His piece regarded the issues of the urban redevelopment and gentrification plans for the Bayview Area of San Francisco.

His piece framed the major theme for tonight: redevelopment and urban change in the Bay Area. We played pieces focusing on both San Francisco and Oakland, looking and redevelopment on both sides of the bay.

Jarrod Sport gave us a wonderful interview and I thank him deeply for being on my show. If you're in interested in hearing his documentary again, you can search is name on prx.org and find out more.

Tune in next week....the summer's just begun! Thank you for listening!

Live: Bruce Bratton

Thanks for listening to this week's show! This past Tuesday we had a wonderful show featuring pieces made by students from the Social Documentation classes of the past years, regarding social and 'political' issues on campus. To compliment our pieces, we had a live interview with KZSC public affairs host Bruce Bratton, of University Grapevine, who discussed the challenges and environments around the spread of information and issues in the UCSC campus and the community .

I was also happy to play my latest documentary piece about the issues of Lighthouse Field and the upcoming state and city decisions on dog-leashing in November. I'll be posting a final version of the documentary soon, but for more information on the issue, please visit Friends of Lighthouse Field.

Tune in next week: student documentarian and teacher discuss about behind-the-scenes.

Tuesdays are the new Fridays.

This new Friday (i.e. Tuesday), we'll explore muses on transportation.... and not always in the most traditional sense. Walking, biking, busing, flying... traditional but complicated.

As we all know, there's more than just getting from here to there.

Debut

At 7pm, June 19th in the year 2007... we went live! The premiere show featured pieces from students in the Community Studies Social Documentation audio labs over the past many, many years. Today's work focused mostly on the theme of houses, home and being home.

Additionally, we spoke to audio lab instructor Marc Ramos of the UCSC Social Sciences II Media Lab. He described the audio lab course that is availble through Summer Session at the UCSC campus; for more information, contact Yours Truely at Hear Me Out's email and I'll get you in touch with Marc. Thank you, Marc, for a fantastic debut interview!

Lastly, a huge thank you to everyone who's helped out by making the documentaries, helping me with mine and pushing me to make this all happen. My energy and inspiration comes from you. This is going to be exhausting but..... HUGE.

Keep it tuned to 88.1 FM. Right'o.
